Qscan pledges more funds for Bushfire Relief

Like many other companies the Qscan Group are deeply concerned and affected by the bushfire crisis that is seemingly unending across the country. We spare a special thought for our colleagues at a number of our regional clinics where the fires have, at times, significantly impacted staff and their families across our Alpenglow, North Coast Radiology and South East Radiology clinics. Today, we have had to close one of our clinics in NSW due to the blazes.

Qscan is pleased to be able to pledge further funds to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund today and we will continue to donate additional amounts to a wide-ranging number of community groups who are providing the aid and support desperately needed. We are fortunate to also have a number of staff who at times like this hold true our value of #compassionatecare and have joined us in donating.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our staff, patients, referrers and communities who are or remain affected.

Revolutionary MRI machine travels 16,000km to Gold Coast Qscan Radiology Clinic, Upper Coomera

A revolutionary piece of technology set to be installed at the Gold Coast’s newest radiology clinic has been delivered more than 16,000km

A GOLD Coast Radiology clinic has received its latest piece of equipment from more than 16,000km away.

The 3T wide bore MRI machine was delivered by crane to Qscan Radiology Clinics in Upper Coomera early this morning, airfreighted all the way from Holland.

The machine represents a total investment of $6 million by Qscan, and will be installed ahead of the clinic’s opening in early September.

Director of Qscan Group Dr Hal Rice said the delivery had been fast tracked by the Federal Government as part of a $375 million program.

“Upper Coomera is a flourishing community who normally would have to travel a long way to access high quality medical services such as these, so to have it right in their backyard will be a real asset,” he said.

“They will be able to get CT, x-ray, ultrasound and now the latest MRI technology right in their backyard.”

The MRI licence program will see 50 new Medicare funded MRI facilities opening across Australia.

Federal Member for Forde Bert van Manen was on site to see the machine delivered, and said it was a reflection of his “commitment to the health of residents across Forde”.

“I understand the importance of these facilities for families facing the travel and stress of dealing with serious medical conditions,” he said.

“It’s important that people in Upper Coomera have access to these lifesaving, Medicare-supported scans.”

Qscan welcomes cancer support for regional areas

Leading diagnostic medical imaging firm Qscan Group has welcomed the commitment by federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to boost cancer care facilities in regional areas.

Mr Shorten today visited the North Coast Radiology Clinic in Ballina, part of the Qscan Group, announcing a $63 million funding package for lung cancer which includes the establishment of 13 new regional radiation centres (including two servicing the NSW North Coast); increasing the number of lung cancer nurses across the country to 21; and a $40 million anti-tobacco campaign.

Mr Shorten today announced that Labor will fund a $63 million package for lung cancer, including a new anti-tobacco campaign, 21 lung cancer nurses and 13 regional radiation centres.

Mr Shorten last week pledged that the Labor Party will invest $2.3 billion in a Medicare Cancer Plan should Labor win the upcoming federal election, aiming to provide improved services for 145,000 Australians who are diagnosed with cancer every year.

People living in regional areas frequently do not have easy access to cancer care facilities and experience the added burden of cost of travel and accommodation to the cost of treatment.

As part of its cancer package, Labor has promised to provide up to six million new diagnostic imaging scans for patients across Australia in the first four years of a Labor government.
Qscan Radiologist Dr Ian Cappe says Qscan’s focus is to take world-leading imaging technology and expertise closer to the patients who need it most.

“It’s obviously an area of need,” Dr Cappe says. “We need a strong public health system and private health sector to ensure that Australia retains one of the best standards of medical care in the world. We support good public health policy – from either side of politics – that benefits patients and we are committed to our practice of bulk billing Medicare eligible scans.”

Dr Cappe says patients in remote areas, such as Ballina on the NSW Far North Coast, who have limited access to Medicare funded, specialist imaging services including PET-CT and MRI, need to travel to access these services. MRI and PET-CT scans are crucial to patients experiencing the ordeal of cancer.

The Ballina region includes a very high proportion of workers on low incomes, disability support pensioners, single-parent families, people aged over 65 years, and a population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders that is almost twice as large as the national average.

The cancer rate per 100,000 people is 41 per cent higher than the national average, reflecting higher rates of smoking, male and female obesity, infant and youth mortality and at-risk alcohol consumption.

Qscan is currently rolling out PET-CT services across more than 10 sites throughout Australia as part of its national expansion. The services are critical for diagnosing and assessing many disorders, including cancer.

Mr Shorten has said Labor will invest $600 million towards eliminating all the out-of-pocket costs for diagnostic imaging. Labor is promising six million free cancer scans over four years, funded by Medicare, including CT scans, PET scans, mammograms, x-rays and ultrasounds – services provided by Qscan nationally.

Qscan Group supports Labor’s significant proposed investment in Diagnostic Imaging Services

Qscan Group, as a leading Australian provider of specialist cancer diagnostic imaging services, including MRI and PET-CT, supports Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten’s, announcement of a $2.3 billion investment in Medicare to provide up to 6 million new diagnostic imaging scans for patients across Australia in the first four years of a Labor Government.

Qscan’s mission is to bring Australia’s best Radiologists and scanning technology to Australian communities that need it most. Qscan has made the largest investment in PET-CT services of any Australian diagnostic imaging group over the last 18 months, opening new clinics across most Australian States and Territories, with a further five PET-CT sites scheduled to open in the next 12 months.

Mr Shorten has committed to spending $600 million towards eliminating all out-of-pocket costs for diagnostic imaging, through greater support via Medicare of a number of key imaging services provided by Qscan nationally, including CT scans, PET scans, mammograms, X-rays and ultrasounds. Qscan already provides zero out-of-pocket cost services for our patients across a large range of our services, including, critical cancer patients accessing our world class PET-CT machines.

Qscan remains committed to supporting regional Australia with World class imaging services, and our Mackay, Queensland clinic is a tremendous example of our ongoing commitment to invest in regional centres thereby reducing the need for patients to travel the vast distances to capital cities to receive the very best inpatient care.

We are also delighted that Labor have undertaken to continue to support the industry’s growth in MRI technology, a service that we at Qscan continue to invest in, as we promote the clinical benefits associated with MRI as a complementary service for the identification and treatment of a variety of cancers.

Theranostics – Lu-PSMA radionuclide therapy for Prostate Cancer at Qscan

Radionuclide therapy is uses tiny molecules to treat cancer.  These molecules enter the body where they emit radiation that travels tiny distances to attack and control cancerous cells. In the case of prostate cancer, the radionuclide is Lutetium-177 (Lu for short) and it is bound to another protein called PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen), which attaches to aggressive prostate cancer cells throughout the body.

Most patients seeking Lu-PSMA therapy are those with metastatic (spread throughout the body) prostate cancer that has continued to spread despite traditional chemotherapies. The cancer is often seen throughout the bony skeleton where it causes severe debilitating pain.

Before considering whether Lu-PSMA therapy is suitable for any patient, we first have the patient undergo a PET-CT scan using the same PSMA protein, which gives us a “roadmap” of where the cancer has spread. The therapy is then given as a straightforward injection over minutes and is generally well-tolerated.  The patient is scanned after the therapy to ensure that the dose has reached the cancer cells where it can act to control the cancer. Over the long term, we use the same type of PET-CT scan to see how effective the LuPSMA therapy has been and to plan further treatments.

Qscan offers this effective & emerging therapy to patients in Brisbane and the Gold Coast with the help of our dedicated expert radiologists and nuclear medicine specialists, who are committed to carefully considering options for radionuclide therapy by working closely with the patient’s oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists.
